As Tasmania is a small jurisdiction, the approach of the Custodial Inspector is to undertake themed inspections of custodial centres focussing on particular inspection standards. At the end of a 3-year cycle, all facets of custodial centres will have been inspected against the full set of inspection standards.

Current inspections

This list includes:

  • Inspections which have been completed for which a report is being prepared
  • Inspections which have been announced for which planning is underway

  • Inspections of Ron Barwick Minimum Security Prison, Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison, Risdon Prison Complex and the Ashley Youth Detention Centre were conducted from 29 October 2018 to 9 November 2018. The theme of particular focus for these inspections was Rehabilitation and Reintegration.
  • Preliminary reports of findings are currently being prepared and the full report will then be written and tabled in Parliament.

  • Inspections of Ron Barwick Minimum Security Prison, Mary Hutchinson Women’s Prison, Risdon Prison Complex, Hobart Reception Prison, Launceston Reception Prison and the Ashley Youth Detention Centre were conducted in August and September 2019.  The theme of particular focus for these inspections was Resources and Systems.
  • Preliminary reports of findings are currently being completed and the full report will then be written and tabled in Parliament.
